Ketchikan.  12 Dec 2003.

Seaport Telecommunications of Ketchikan and Globalstar USA announced today that Seaport Telecommunications has become a Globalstar dealer, selling equipment and service plans from its Seaport Cyber locations in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway.  Seaport’s Montana partner R&R Satellite of Lewistown will also carry the line.

As part of the marketing plan Seaport is in the process of installing Globalstar units on the Alaska Marine Highway ferries  These public payphones can be used with major credit cards, collect calls, and with pre-paid cards purchased at a vending machine on board.

Seaport Telecommunications will provide the Globalstar 1600 hand held phone on a rental basis to kayakers, cruise ship passengers, recreational cruisers, and other people needing a telephone solution in areas not covered by cellular towers.  The Globalstar fixed units are a solution being implemented by remote lodges, cruise lines, the ferry system; and are rapidly being installed nationwide in hospitals, law enforcement buildings and mobiles, schools, and communication and transportation hubs as the homeland security people have recommended  backups for all critical infrastructure.

The public payphone solution being provided by Seaport Telecommunications includes NCIC of Houston Texas as the operator services provider and International Telecom of Anchorage as the pre-paid platform.
